Junior Coach

David Silk

David has over three decades of experience working with junior squash players, in schools and clubs, with all standards and abilities. He currently works at the Leys School in Cambridge, and has a strong background in sports and fitness, coaching swimming and strength & conditioning sessions as well as his expertise in squash.

David’s infectious enthusiasm ensures his students enjoy their time on court; his years of experience mean he is excellent at managing groups of children in a sports setting. We are very pleased to have David running our junior programme!

Swavesey Squash Club has a very large and active ladies’ section, with over 35 female members. We have weekly group lessons for female beginners, suitable for players with absolutely no experience. These require no equipment apart from clean, non-marking shoes, and we usually see around 8-12 ladies at the sessions, so newcomers will be able to meet lots of players at the same stage as them. Our head coach Ali Loke takes these sessions; she takes players through the fundamentals and the players attending work together to develop their hitting skills.

We also have lots of opportunities for our intermediate and advanced female players. Swavesey Squash Club has a women’s team in the Cambridgeshire Leagues, which offers a chance to play competitively against other women’s teams from other clubs in the area. All our general club activities are open to all genders, and our members are very welcoming.

There are regular ladies’ nights at the club, which are a fun way to get to know the other women playing at the club, and bring all the ladies, whatever level, together. We think that Swavesey Squash Club is one of the best clubs in the Cambridge area for female squash players!

For the competitive player, Swavesey offers two teams in the Cambridgeshire Leagues (in addition to the women’s team).

1st Team – Division 1
Representing the club in the top division of the Cambs League, the 1st Team features some of the club’s top players. The 1sts hope to challenge the top teams in Cambridgeshire and the surrounding counties, in their first season in the premier division.

2nd Team – Division 4
The 2nd Team is in the bottom division of the Cambs League. Whilst still a competitive standard, the 2nds usually face the lower teams from larger clubs, or the top players from smaller clubs. The 2nds will be eyeing promotion to the 3rd division this season!

The 1sts play home matches on Wednesdays, and the 2nds on Thursdays, from 7pm, and any interested supporters are more than welcome to cheer on the team. Both teams will have some thrilling matches across the upcoming season. New players are very welcome to try out for either team. Whilst competitive, the teams are also very social, with the aim being to have a nice evening out, with a meal and drinks after the teams play their match. You don’t have to be a top league player to enjoy team squash, and it’s a great way to develop your game by playing against some very different opponents in a competitive setting.

Upcoming Tournaments
